TORONTO (ABC News) — A Canadian online pharmacy that sells fake versions of Viagra has been seized by the Canadian authorities and charged with selling the medication without a prescription.
Canadian authorities have arrested the online pharmacy — a Canadian online website with more than 30 domains — for selling counterfeit versions of Viagra.
The Canadian federal prosecutor’s office said the fake versions are made by a company called Cipla, which was founded by former Canadian President of Health Minister Bob Guidor in 2007.
The company, which also sells herbal Viagra, sold the medications without a prescription to the Canadian government in 2015. Cipla then sold the medications, but it was never charged with a violation of Health Canada’s online prescription program.
The Canadian Health Ministry said it has not received any reports of the sale of counterfeit Viagra.
The Canadian Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said it was acting on a complaint by an international law enforcement agency. CBP said it will immediately issue a warning to authorities.
“We continue to take the necessary steps to identify and eliminate these counterfeit and potentially unsafe pharmaceutical products,” said CBP Commissioner David M. Hirsch.
The CBP said it will not release any information to the public about the cases until the investigation is complete.
The investigation is ongoing.
